The aviary

Community

Planned improvements

There has been an aviary in Victoria Park since at least the early 1900’s. Many people have shared their memories of the aviary going back over generations and consider it a key attraction.

The existing aviary, built in the 1980s, requires a lot of time to clean and maintain the environment for each of the different species. The redevelopment proposals will improve the aviary for visitors and the birds and animals.

What are the plans?

To resurface the enclosure areas and include new drainage gullies for each of the four areas for a clean and safe environment.

  • To clean and repaint the external structure
  • To add viewing panels at different heights to allow better visibility for the community
  • To add additional features of interest for the birds and animals to make their habitat more stimulating
  • To add planting, bringing in natural features and shade
  • Interpretation panels will be added so visitors can learn more about the birds and mammals.

Will the birds and mammals change?

We are reviewing the types of species of birds and possibly small mammals that are best suited to life in the aviary.
